GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and  organizations to transform their communities and the world. The organization works with partners across sectors and borders to understand the drivers and impacts of generosity, explore giving behaviors and patterns, and use data to inspire more giving around the world. GivingTuesday offers the largest philanthropic data collaborative effort in the social sector — with unique, granular datasets from a wide range of organizations featuring key sector information

As we scale up, we are expanding the team that supports our research and strategic communications to enable more support for our work and connect with the various stakeholders we serve.

In pursuit of the goals and expansion of the data commons, GivingTuesday partners with key organizations to leverage their expertise to manage and lead different aspects of the work. These data & technology partners (DARO, With Intent) manage staff, projects, and ongoing functions for the data commons with dedicated staff embedded in GivingTuesday in those capacities in cross-functional roles. This role is one of these positions - managed by our partner organizations but embedded in GivingTuesday’s Data Team.

Research Writer

Our global data science team works on a diverse set of problems and projects related to learning, insights, and impact measurement in the nonprofit sector. We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Research Writer & Editor to support the development and dissemination of GivingTuesday Data Commons research. This includes producing and editing research proposals, academic and applied research publications, as well as translating findings into blog posts, briefs and other public-facing content.

The ideal candidate will have experience translating complex data and research into accessible, compelling narratives tailored for a range of audiences, including nonprofit leaders, funders, practitioners, researchers, and the public. This role is key in advancing collaborative research efforts, strengthening thought leadership, and ensuring our work meets high standards of clarity, rigor, and relevance.

In this role you will perform the following :

Proposal Writing & Content Development

  • Draft and develop concept notes and research proposals for academic, philanthropic, and private sector funders and stakeholders.
  • Work with internal and external collaborators to scope project goals, methodologies, and deliverables.
  • Tailor content to align with funder priorities, grant guidelines, and institutional goals.

Editing and Review

  • Edit and revise concept notes proposals, research papers, reports, white papers, blog posts and other materials for clarity, coherence, and style.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and adherence to academic and publishing standards (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
  • Provide developmental editing to strengthen structure, argumentation, and impact.
  • Content Creation and Translation

  • Translate research findings into clear, engaging formats such as blog posts, research briefs, data narratives, and other content.
  • Support the creation of presentation narratives, executive summaries, and communication assets for external stakeholders.
  • Help identify opportunities to repurpose research content across platforms and formats.
  • Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with data analysts, researchers, and partnerships staff to gather inputs and translate findings.
  • Contribute to dissemination strategies for key findings including conference materials, executive summaries, and briefings for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure research is communicated effectively to multiple audiences.
  • We are looking for someone with :

  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methods, particularly in social science or nonprofit sectors.
  • Excellent command of written English, with strong grammar, structure, and editing skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and tailor content for different formats and audiences, including research outputs and proposals.
  • Experience translating research into engaging, accessible content.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative, remote environment and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong self-management skills, and ability to coordinate and prioritize work within competing priorities.
  • GivingTuesday is actively seeking candidates with unique and diverse work backgrounds to grow our team. We are especially excited to talk to you if have :

  • Experience with data storytelling and visualizations is a plus.
  • An advanced degree in a quantitative  and / or mixed methods field (definitely not required!)
  • Position type : This is a full-time, 4-month term contract

    Location Details :

    Remote across Canada.

    Montreal-based staff work a hybrid schedule in our Montreal office (in-office 3 days per week, WFH for 2 days)

    Work Hours : We are looking for candidates who can overlap with a 9 : 00 to 5 : 00 EST workday for at least 4 hours per day.

    Salary Range : This is a 4-month contract position, paid at a rate equivalent to an annual salary of $60,000–$75,000, prorated for the contract duration.

    For candidates in other locations we offer a salary that fits within our budget and takes into account local employment costs.
