Job Description

Disability Specialist – responsible for coordinating and managing non-occupational disability cases, developing return-to-work plans, ensuring compliance with human rights legislation, and driving continuous improvement of AIM’s disability management program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage non-occupational disability cases from initial claim through resolution.
  • Liaise with employees, medical providers, insurance carriers, and internal stakeholders to support timely claim decisions and interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, confidential documentation.
  • Collaborate with the HR Director Shared Services to facilitate disability governance and SLA performance reviews.
  • Develop and oversee individualized, medically supported return-to-work plans for employees returning from non-occupational leaves.
  • Identify suitable accommodations in collaboration with managers and healthcare providers under duty to accommodate provisions of the law.
  • Monitor progress and adjust RTW plans as needed based on medical updates and business needs.
  • Ensure processes align with federal and provincial human rights, privacy, and accessibility legislation.
  • Keep up to date with evolving disability and accommodation legislation and group benefits policies.
  • Support internal policy development and contribute to disability management program enhancements.
  • Design and implement training for the HR Community and management on disability best practices and processes.
  • Act as a resource for HR, managers, and employees by providing guidance on disability leave procedures and accommodation strategies.
  • Facilitate clear, compassionate communication between all involved parties.
  • Promote early intervention strategies and employee well-being initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Disability Management, Human Resources, Occupational Health, Health Sciences, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) or Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) is an asset.
  • 3–5 years of experience managing non-occupational disability cases (STD, LTD) in a corporate or industrial environment.
  • Experience working with third-party disability insurance providers and employee benefits programs.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian human rights and privacy laws as they relate to disability and accommodation.
  • Excellent case management, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive matters with empathy and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems.
  • Bilingual (French / English).
  • Ability to connect and build relationships with all stakeholders.
