Overview
Over the past few years, we have witnessed an elevated quality of filmmaking, thanks to Visual Effects that realistically blend digital elements with live-action footage to create vast, unimaginable landscapes that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to film.
Rahul Venugopal, our next pathbreaker, Senior Visual Effects Artist (Montreal, Canada), specializes in creating Digital Environments for a variety of projects for Films and TV series.
Rahul talks to Shyam Krishnamurthy from The Interview Portal about key skills for a VFX Artist—creating digital matte paintings, compositing different elements together, and making sure everything looks seamless on screen.

Experience and Notable Work
Rahul has worked on projects across eight countries, including feature films, TV series, commercials, and VR experiences. Notable credits include working on the film Eega as an On-Set VFX Supervisor and The Expendables 2 as a Digital Matte Painter, among others. He later achieved his dream of working on Hollywood features.
Typical Day and What the Job Solves
A typical day starts with reviewing shots from the previous day’s work, followed by a daily team meeting to discuss progress and technical challenges. The work involves creating digital matte paintings, compositing elements, and ensuring shots look seamless to help audiences believe what they see is real, even when it is computer-generated.
Advice and Future Plans
Advice to students: stay curious, explore interests beyond tests or grades, and collaborate with like-minded people on personal projects. Do not fear failure, and be open to possibilities. Rahul plans to continue growing with the evolving visual effects landscape, especially with AI as a tool, and to mentor young people to help them explore their interests.
