What is the opportunity?As a Trust Specialist, Civil Law, with RBC Royal Trust, you will assist the Principal Trust Specialist, Civil Law, for the Professional Practice Group—the centre of technical and legal expertise for The Royal Trust Company and for RBC Wealth Management partners—on civil law fiduciary matters. You will focus on problem-solving and risk management at both the enterprise and account levels, while balancing client service, operational and administrative capacity, and the protection of Royal Trust’s interests in accordance with the business’ risk tolerance.This is a full-time contractual position of 15 months.
Que ferez-vous ?
- Assist in providing ongoing support (including business-appropriate guidance and suggestions), primarily of a legal and analytical nature, to Royal Trust employees across Canada on civil law matters.
- Assist the Principal Trust Specialist, Civil Law, in making reasoned and informed recommendations relating to estate, trust, and protection mandate/tutorship issues, including but not limited to interpretation issues, disbursements, succession of trustees, disputes and complaints, and all related issues.
- Act as a subject matter expert and point of contact on complex legal issues for the Wills and Trusts Resource Group on civil law matters.
- Review legal documentation related to client-specific situations or head office agreements to ensure legal accuracy, adherence to internal policy and risk management principles, and appropriate description of services.
- Participate in the creation of civil law training materials for Royal Trust staff.
- Provide support to Will and Estate Advisors on civil law, internal policy and administrative matters for new business opportunities.
- Remain current in recent developments in the area of estate, trust and incapacity law.

Must-have
- Notary or lawyer with a Quebec civil law degree
- Excellent knowledge of the Civil Code of Québec provisions on estates, trusts, protection mandates, tutorship to persons of full age and administration of the property of others
- Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly serve our clients and do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs
- Strong legal analysis skills and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and client service skills
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work under pressure
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Willingness to participate in continuous learning
Nice-to-have
- Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation attained or in the process of being attained
- Experience in estate and trust law, and the laws touching on incapacity and administration of the property of others (2+ years)
