Job Description

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

The Risk, Analytics, Models, Pricing and PnL (RAMPP) group within QTS is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the technical delivery organization for the Capital Markets Strategic Funding Program. As Director of Engineering, you will manage a team of 20–25 senior software engineers, technical architects, and technical leads while partnering closely with solution architects, product managers, and business stakeholders to deliver world-class trading and risk solutions. You will be accountable for technical excellence, engineering velocity, talent development, and the successful delivery of initiatives that directly impact our Capital Markets business and our clients globally.

In addition to your program delviery responsibilities you will act as the Montreal Head of Engineering for the Funding, Treasury and Liquidity (FTL) organization. This organization sits within RAMPP and runs multiple initiatives, one of which is the strategic funding program.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Directly lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team of 20–25 people for the Funding program, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and ownership. This will include permanent RBC staff and offshore vendor staff.

  • In your Montreal lead capacity you will act as local line manager for resources across multiple initiatives, ensuring resources are performing well in their tasks and act as a regional leader to ensure the team has continuity, a sense of identity and purpose at the FTL level. You will work with other technical directors to ensure their Montreal resources are effective.

  • Establish and execute a clear technical vision aligned with enterprise architecture standards and business strategy. Work closely with solution architects to translate functional requirements into scalable, maintainable engineering solutions that address data strategy, cross-asset reuse, and separation of concerns.

  • Drive delivery of multiple concurrent initiatives at varying scales and complexity. Manage dependencies, risks, and timelines while maintaining flexibility to respond to changing business priorities and market conditions.

  • Build and scale engineering practices and processes. Establish coding standards, deployment pipelines, testing frameworks, and monitoring capabilities that enable rapid, reliable delivery at enterprise scale.

  • Champion a culture of delegation and empowerment. Push decision-making to team members, encourage technical risk-taking within guardrails, and create space for engineers to grow through challenging work and mentorship.

  • Manage technical staffing and resource planning. Assess team capability gaps, advocate for hiring and development investment, and build partnerships with recruiting and learning teams.

  • In this role, you will communicate and interact frequently with RBC partners and/or employees located across Canada and/or worldwide

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

Must have:

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including a minimum of 6+ years in senior engineering leadership or management roles leading teams of 15 or more people. Demonstrated success building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations with a track record of developing individual contributors into senior engineers and managers, with evidence of team members promoted into leadership roles or significantly expanded scope.

  • Deep technical expertise at enterprise scale in modern software development across multiple of the following areas: Java and/or C++, SQL and relational databases, containerized application development, microservices architecture, event-driven systems, real-time data processing, and enterprise integration patterns. Active adoption of AI development tools to accelerate delivery and increase code quality.

  • A track record of success recruiting, hiring, and retaining top engineering talent. Experience building inclusive teams and fostering diverse perspectives.

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, executive presence, and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to senior leaders, business partners, and external stakeholders. Strong presentation and facilitation skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in a global financial institution, ideally building trading, risk management, or capital markets solutions. Experience with regulatory and operational risk management a plus.

  • Experience managing engineering organizations in matrix environments within large, publicly-traded financial institutions.

  • Hands-on experience with capital markets operations, including securities (Fixed Income and Equity) front and back office processes, trade lifecycle events, and post-trade settlement.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, equity participation, and flexible benefits, with competitive compensation aligned to market and performance.

  • Executive leadership and coaching support to develop your skills as you grow.

  • The opportunity to shape the technical direction of a critical global business and make lasting impact on our Capital Markets clients and RBC’s market position.

  • A world-class team of talented engineers and a collaborative leadership culture.

  • A world-class training program in financial services and emerging technologies.

  • Flexible work/life balance options and support for your wellbeing.

  • Opportunities to work on high-complexity, business-critical technical challenges at enterprise scale.
