Mechasys

Director of HR Mechasys | Scaling People, Culture & Precision in XR Construction Tech | Startup Talent Builder

At Mechasys, we believe the construction industry deserves tools as precise and innovative as the finished article it creates. That’s why we’ve developed the XR Projector, a state-of-the-art 3D positioning tool that brings blueprints to life, directly on the job site. Using BIM / CAD models, our XR Projector projects blueprints at a 1:1 scale with millimetre accuracy, eliminating guesswork, cutting rework by up to 50%, and helping teams complete projects faster and smarter.

Proudly based in Montreal, we’re driven by a passion for precision, quality, and transforming how the world builds. As we scale, we’re looking for talented individuals to join our mission and help shape the future of construction technology.

Mission

To translate Mechasys' complex robotic projection and site-scanning technology into a simple, intuitive, and reliable user experience. This role will own the design of our entire software ecosystem—from the mobile applications controlling the XR Projector in the field to the web-based "Layout Cloud" platform used for project management—ensuring a seamless, efficient, and best-in-class workflow for construction professionals.

Core Responsibilities

  • Product Leadership & Design: Lead and own the end-to-end design process for all Mechasys software products, including our mobile control applications (iOS / Android) and our web-based data platform.
  • Field-Based User Research: Conduct deep user research, including on-site visits to construction projects, to understand the unique environmental challenges and "field workflows" of our personas. Generate actionable findings based on research outcomes, which will be used to inform the foundation of our design strategy.
  • Design Thought Leadership: Serve as the product design voice and thought leader throughout the organization, driving strategic vision.
  • Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate and secure buy-in for strategic initiatives by articulating the value and benefits of user experience across all business channels.
  • Innovation: Stay current on the latest design tools, technologies, and processes, providing informed recommendations and advocacy for improvements within Mechasys.
  • Workflow & Interaction Design: Map complex user flows, create wireframes, and build high-fidelity interactive prototypes that make sophisticated robotic tasks (like site calibration, plan projection, and as-built scanning) feel simple.
  • Interface & Visual Design: Design clean, robust, and highly functional user interfaces that perform reliably in demanding field conditions (e.g., high-glare, dust, gloved hands).
  • Design System Management: Develop and maintain a comprehensive design system (D-System) to ensure consistency, quality, and velocity as our engineering team scales.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management to define requirements, and with Engineering to ensure technically feasible designs are implemented to specification.
  • Usability Testing: Own the usability testing process, iterating rapidly on feedback from both internal and external users to solve core usability problems.

Required Qualifications & Profile

  • 5+ Years of Experience: A minimum of 5 years in UI / UX design, with a strong portfolio showcasing complex, data-rich web applications and mobile applications, along with a proven history of distilling user research into successful, quantifiable design outcomes.
  • Proven B2B / Hardware-in-the-Loop Experience: Your portfolio must demonstrate experience designing for industrial, B2B, or complex "human-in-the-loop" systems (e.g., robotics, IoT, manufacturing, logistics, or AEC tech). Experience designing for a standard B2C or simple SaaS product is insufficient.
  • Field Workflow Obsession: A genuine passion for understanding and simplifying complex physical-world workflows. You must be comfortable putting on a hard hat and boots to learn from our users directly.
  • Strategic & Business Acumen: Drive design decisions by expertly balancing user needs, business requirements, and technical constraints.
  • Technical Fluency: Expertise in modern design, prototyping, and research tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, UserTesting) and a strong understanding of the technical constraints of web and mobile development.
  • Startup Velocity: A high-ownership, "roll-up-your-sleeves" mentality suited for a high-growth, Series A environment. Must be able to manage ambiguity and prioritize effectively.

Preferred Qualifications (Bonus Points)

  • Experience in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) or ConTech industries.
  • Direct experience designing interfaces for robotic or complex IoT hardware.
  • Experience with 3D data visualization or BIM software.
