The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI‑MUHC) is a world‑renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI‑MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS).

Position Summary

Department / Research Programme: Department of Surgery / Surgical and Interventional Sciences (SIS) Program.

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Perioperative Care and Outcomes Research (PCOR) lab at the RI‑MUHC Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE). Our work capitalises on established and emerging principles of outcomes research to: create innovative, patient‑centered strategies to measure postoperative outcomes, assess the comparative effectiveness of contemporary interventions to enhance recovery, and develop approaches to reduce harms associated with perioperative care interventions (e.g., postoperative opioid over‑prescribing). The incumbent will work alongside Dr. Julio Fiore.

General Duties

  • Work with the Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator in the development and conduct of various research studies, including a multi‑centre Randomised Controlled Trial focused on opioid vs opioid‑free analgesia after breast surgery (PAIN‑Alt Trial).
  • Support lab research activities such as obtaining informed consent forms, recruiting study participants, managing data‑collection documents and collecting data (qualitative and quantitative).
  • Contribute to literature reviews.
  • Assist with training and overseeing the work of students and other research personnel.
  • Organise team meetings and maintain communications with project stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison with clinical services and community partners.
  • Engage in administrative duties related to the research programme.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports, manuscripts and grant applications.

Education / Experience

Education: Master’s Degree in Health Sciences / Epidemiology.

Work Experience: Equivalent experience in clinical research is required for applicants not holding a Master’s degree.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work in person at the Montreal General Hospital (PCOR headquarters) and relocate to other McGill‑affiliated hospitals when required.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisation, planning and project‑management skills.
  • Experience with clinical research design, conduct, analysis and reporting.
  • Superior English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate in French.

Desirable Assets

  • Experience assisting or coordinating randomised controlled trials.
  • Experience assisting or coordinating multi‑centre studies.
  • Experience with research focused on surgical patients or patients with acute conditions.
  • Knowledge of statistics and statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R).
  • Knowledge of data management using REDCap.
  • Experience with scientific writing (manuscripts, grant applications).

Additional Information

  • Status: Temporary, full‑time (35‑hour workweek).
  • Pay Scale: Commensurate with education and experience. $49,722.40 – $92,346.80.
  • Work Shift: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Work Site: MGH, 1650 Cedar Ave.
