Research Associate – Climate
Location : Sydney, Australia (UNSW CSH node, Climate Change Research Centre)
Type : Full‑time, Fixed Term – 11 months (TBD / Dec 31 2026)
Salary : $113,000 – $121,000 (plus 17% superannuation, annual leave loading).
About the Role
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will conduct research that advances the understanding of Australia’s climate, its extremes and drivers, and improve future projections to inform climate adaptation solutions. You will contribute to the CSH project “High Resolution Rainfall Extremes” and work with investigators in the National Environmental Science Program.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent and collaborative research on high‑resolution rainfall extremes.
- Design, run, and analyze atmosphere and coupled climate model simulations (e.g. WRF) and large‑ensemble experiments (CMIP, CORDEX, NARCliM).
- Develop bias‑correction techniques for model boundary conditions.
- Analyze observations, reanalysis, and model output to support research objectives.
- Co‑design research projects with stakeholders and produce peer‑reviewed publications.
- Present findings at local, national and global conferences.
- Mentor PhD students, contribute to committees, and lead workshops as appropriate.
- Adhere to UNSW health and safety, code of conduct and values.
Qualifications
- PhD in Physical Climate Science, Climate Modelling, Atmosphere / Ocean Dynamics or closely related discipline.
- Strong track record of independent scientific research and peer‑reviewed publications.
- Proficiency in Unix / Linux programming (Python, Fortran, Matlab, R).
- Experience with regional climate simulations (WRF) and applying bias correction.
- Knowledge of regional climate processes and / or land‑atmosphere interactions.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to UNSW values, diversity and inclusion.
