Overview
Join to apply for the Designer, Project role at Aecon Group Inc.
We’re looking for passionate professionals who thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to contribute to impactful projects that shape communities. If you're driven by purpose and want to be part of a team that builds with integrity and innovation, Aecon Utilities is where your career can thrive.
What is the Opportunity?
AUE is seeking a Project Designer to develop high-level telecom designs that support the planning and execution of FTTH and OSP infrastructure builds. You will work closely with survey data, GIS platforms, and engineering inputs to produce accurate, constructible plans while coordinating across CAD, permitting, and QA teams.
What You’ll Do Here
- Develop FTTH / OSP / ISP High-Level Designs (HLD), including feeder / distribution routing, boundary definitions, handhole / chamber concepts, and preliminary splice / segmentation strategy.
- Ingest survey and Geomatics inputs (i.e., LiDAR, RTK, IKE pole audits) and client / municipal GIS to inform routing decisions.
- Validate base mapping, utilities, and right-of-way constraints; flag conflicts and propose mitigations early in the design process.
- Author HLD drawings using Aecon’s telecom title-block and plan standards (Data Extract, Conduit Plan, Cable Plan, 500 / 601 sheets); maintain version control.
- Use AutoCAD and applicable design rules; familiarity with ESRI / GIS and client platforms is beneficial.
- Run internal reviews and resolve comments through the Comment Resolution Matrix (CRM) process prior to submission.
- Package HLDs for Document Control and coordinate with CAD / Permitting teams for Municipal Consent (MC), permit applications, and LLD / IFC development.
- Support QA / QC readiness for design audits and contribute to lessons learned and template improvements.
What You Bring To The Team
- 2+ years of telecom design experience (FTTH / OSP / ISP), with emphasis on High-Level Design (HLD) or conceptual design; understanding of aerial vs. underground constructability is an asset.
- Ability to read base maps, utility records, and municipal standards; strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, ESRI / GIS, Google Earth / KMZ, and client systems is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, SharePoint); committed to safety and quality standards.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical / Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related program is considered an asset.
Aecon fosters diversity, inclusion and belonging within and across our organization. We welcome all to apply including women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
