JAVA Developer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer with 6+ years of hands-on experience to join our team in Toronto. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in mainframe technologies along with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Note: This is a contract role, requires onsite presence in Toronto, and candidates must be available for a face-to-face interview.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain applications using COBOL (Regular, IMS, DB2 modules).
• Write and optimize JCLs, SORT, and ICETOOL for batch processing.
• Provide design decisions, troubleshoot production job failures, and implement medium to large-scale projects into production.
• Investigate emergency/production issues and provide timely updates to business and stakeholders.
• Perform quick data fixes using SORT/FOCUS/SAS to resolve night batch job failures and ensure batch flow continuity.
• Create and manage VSAM datasets, including logic for reading/writing VSAM files.
• Collaborate in Agile sessions with product owners to refine requirements, provide high-level estimates, and assess impacts.
• Prepare and present solution designs to clients and work closely with offshore teams.
• Support deployment activities, including implementation planning and warranty support for changes.
• Strengthen and enhance knowledge transfer processes with offshore teams.
• Utilize tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Git, IBM Z Developer, VS Code, Git Co-Pilot and optionally Mural, Visio, or Lucidchart.

Qualifications & Skills

• 6+ years of mainframe experience.
• Strong knowledge of COBOL (IMS & DB2), JCL, SORT, ICETOOL, and VSAM datasets.
• Experience with production support, design decisions, and emergency issue resolution.
• Familiarity with Agile methodology and direct client interaction.
• Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Hands-on experience with deployment activities and implementation planning.
• Exposure to GenAI tools (VS Code, Git Co-Pilot, etc.) in day-to-day development is a plus.
• Experience with JIRA, Confluence, Git, IBM Z Developer (Mural optional).
• Ability to create process diagrams (Visio/Lucidchart) is an added advantage.
