Job Summary

The Manager, Standards Research forms part of the Standards Research team such that the research produced enhances the quality of CSA’s current standards portfolio, helps grow the portfolio to address emerging Standards’ needs, and helps advance standards readiness and thought leadership. They are responsible for facilitating and managing research projects within the Standards Research program as well as helping to support other project leads in the management of research projects, as needed. While this role has no direct reports, the individual requires a capacity to engage and manage external parties as well as develop cross-sector relationships within the organization. This role oversees the quality of research proposals and outputs, and oversees the research projects from beginning to end. Works with internal and external teams to finalize and publish research reports and to promote them to external audiences. Works with CSA staff to promote the results of research projects and the Research Program in general both internally and externally.

Responsibilities

  • Sound knowledge of academic research environment, government and industry environment as relates to scientific research, including key parties, funding opportunities, leading edge activities, risks, influencers.
  • Has strong understanding of research methodology and publication standards and an ability to provide sound advice on best research practices, where applicable, to internal and external research team members.
  • Understands the various processes and procedures of the company, as well as those within the research environment including informed consent, contracts and research study management. A key element of the position is to ensure that these processes and procedures are adhered to, risks are anticipated and mitigated, and that the timelines of projects are achieved within defined budgets.
  • Ability to oversee research projects that cover a wide range of topics.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with internal and external team members and external parties with no formal reporting relationship to CSA Group, e.g., Project Managers, volunteers, researchers, industry experts, parties with lived experience, academia and government.
  • Works closely with Marketing, Legal, Finance, Standards Development, Strategic Standards Development teams, interfacing with other teams as required, to oversee research projects from approval to publication and beyond, ensure publication of high-quality research reports, communicate research insights and promote thought leadership.
  • Manages research projects from approval to completion and subsequent promotion.
  • Ensures quality of research and associated reports by overseeing the research process including but not limited to RFP development, researcher selection, advisory panel management, contract execution, report development, editing, legal review, translation, design and publication on the corporate website.
  • Works with internal teams to promote research publications and other research program activities, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communications skills and an ability to work diplomatically with internal and external parties in support of achieving a successful project that meets the objectives of the proposed work.
  • Ability to anticipate potential project risks, and to recognize and propose alternative solutions in the face of challenges at the team and project level.
  • Ability to use research skills and knowledge to directly contribute to research projects and associated reports, where applicable.
  • Contributes to program KPIs by keeping projects, to the best of their abilities, on time and on budget, in keeping with the high quality expected of the research program.

Experience And Education

  • Graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in science, engineering, health or related field
  • 5 years of relevant experience in a standards or research environment
  • Experience in developing and managing research projects
  • Experience with publication of research
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and ability to review and prepare clear concise reports and other research material
  • Ability to work in diverse topic areas outside of main area of expertise
  • Professional and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational, planning and coordination skills Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, discretion and diplomacy
