Job Summary
The Manager, Engineering Field Technology is responsible for numerous technology initiatives that improve the safety and efficiency of the railroad. The incumbent oversees the research and implementation of new technologies in Engineering. The position leads Field Technology in ensuring proper inspection coverage across the network. The role plans strategically to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Additionally, the incumbent collaborates with Engineering Information Systems to ascertain that new technologies are properly integrated into CN’s Information and Technology (I&T) systems, so that Engineering can monitor the value and progress of each technology initiative.
Main Responsibilities
Research and Strategic Development
- Research and identify new technologies that add value to the Company
- Develop strategies for enhancing the utilization and ability of existing technologies to maximize their benefits
Collaboration
Collaborate with Supply Management to ensure proper contracts are in place for purchasing and leasing advanced products across the CN system Cooperate with equipment and technology suppliers to track the reliability as well as accuracy of technology for continued improvement Assist in developing user-friendly reports and easy-to-access information Engineering Program and Project Management
Develop financial estimates, submit business cases on new projects, and monitor spending to ensure that projects stay within budget Oversee the autonomous geometry and joint bar testing Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP) as well as the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programs within Engineering Plan schedules, track productivity of equipment and personnel as well as continual staff development Contribute to joint bar analysis and reporting Provide standards and testing support Industry and Regulatory Engagement
Attend railway research committee meetings to ensure CN is aligned with the industry concerning new technology projects Communicate with regulatory agencies on new technologies and improvements that CN is making to create a safer workplace Oversee successful implementation of new technologies, processes, and communication of projects across CN’s network Assist with improvements to Track Inspection System (TIS) and make site visits to confirm projects are progressing as planned Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires occasional travel (30%).

Experience
Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience Experience in technology development and implementation Experience managing multiple complex projects Experience in establishing best operating practices Experience in Railroad operations, inspection, and maintenance Experience at CN Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset Education / Certification / Designation
Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Engineering Valid Drivers License and ability to obtain a passport High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Diploma Competencies
