Purpose of Role : Weir Marine Engineering (WME) requires a Virtual Infrastructure and Containerization Specialist to design, develop, and test IT solutions in a hybrid and private cloud infrastructure involving a mix of on-premises full-stack Software Defined Data Center and AWS / Azure cloud for existing and future ships of the Royal Canadian Navy. WME operates the Naval Engineering Test Establishment for the Department of National Defence. This is a very technical position for a subject matter expert, involving investigation, analysis and hands-on work with systems in test environments to arrive at the architecture and detailed design for the systems. In some cases, validation and pilot deployment after testing may be conducted in production environments. There is no on-call requirement or user support associated with this role. This is a permanent, full-time, hybrid position based in either LaSalle QC or Halifax NS. Some work must be performed on-site, but most of the work can be performed either remotely or on-site, at your choice.

Key Responsibilities :

Client Interfacing : Interact with clients and business / technical stakeholders to understand, extract and develop project requirements (functional, operational, performance, security, etc.);

System Design : Produce architecture design reference diagrams / documentation in accordance with the group’s style using established templates;

Technical Execution : Conduct technical investigations and evaluations, produce configurations and implementation procedures for deployment on client production networks, develop methodical test plans and conduct test events;

Team Collaboration : Participate in internal and external review, coordination and progress meetings, and conduct review of technical work from your peers;

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications :

Ten or more years of relevant IT technical experience;

Demonstrate extensive technical work experience in areas such as : Containerization and Kubernetes design and configuration; design and configuration of high availability virtual infrastructure clusters; and workload migration and management in a hybrid and / or private on-premise cloud infrastructure;

In order to aid in the successful completion of ongoing work, the candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of the following :

Kubernetes on Red Hat Openshift, VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, or other similar products;

Software Defined Data Center infrastructure comprising of either VMware Cloud Foundation, Red Hat Virtualization, or OpenStack;

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and / or Microsoft Azure Cloud Service;

Automation using Ansible, Powershell and Helm;

Domain Name System (DNS);

Active Directory and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP);

IP VLANs and Routing;

Linux and Windows Server Operating Systems;

Fundamental understanding of CI / CD pipelines and GitOps.

Fast learner, proactive, responsive, self-driven, excellent organizational skills, takes ownership and demonstrates pride in their work, pays attention to detail, and can work autonomously;

Canadian citizenship, with 10 or more years residing in Canada with no periods longer than six continuous months out of country, is absolutely necessary as part of the requirements to obtain a government security clearance to the minimum level of Secret.
