Overview

As a member of the military, Airborne Electronic Sensor Operators use advanced electronic sensor systems onboard various aircraft including long-range patrol aircraft, maritime helicopters, search and rescue aircraft, and remotely piloted aircraft. They participate as crewmembers on maritime and overland missions such as underwater warfare, above-water warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and search and rescue. They also assist other government agencies in collecting evidence related to fisheries, pollution, and counter-narcotics patrols.

Their primary responsibilities include :

  • Performing aircrew tasks on fixed wing, rotary wing, and remotely-piloted aircraft
  • Conducting mission planning and preparation
  • Performing photo reconnaissance and electronic warfare operations
  • Managing tactical information and operating various sensor and support systems
  • Conducting helicopter utility operations and acting as a helicopter door gunner
  • Performing routine and tactical communications

Work environment

Operators usually work onboard aircraft, on airbase flight lines, ship flight decks, or with ground support groups. They are typically stationed on Canada's East and West coasts and deploy worldwide for Canadian and Allied missions and exercises.

Entry plans

No prior experience is required. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, with specific math requirements. Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification and Environmental Training, followed by a 4-month Basic Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator Course. Afterward, candidates complete operational aircrew training on specific platforms. Opportunities exist for specialized and advanced training in electronic warfare, intelligence analysis, leadership, and more.

Part-time options

Part-time employment is available through the Primary Reserve, with training and duties similar to the Regular Force but with less frequent commitments and the possibility of volunteering for deployments.
